George’s story
George knew the transition would be hard. He knew this was coming, but he really wasn’t ready. Well, how could you be after 49 years with the same person?
He could take care of himself and had been for the past year as Marian got sick and couldn’t do much. He could cook, clean and manage the grocery store.
But what he wasn’t sure he could manage were the quiet nights. He would read to Marian books he would get at the library, and they would chat about the characters during the day as he made them sandwiches for lunch or tea in the afternoon.
The nights were so quiet now. He roamed from room to room looking for something he couldn’t quite name.
Maybe tomorrow he’d go back to the shelter to see if that raggedy old cat was still there. Marian had seen him about a month ago on one of her rare outings and fell in love. George didn’t think he could take on anything else at the moment, but maybe now was the right time. The idea made him feel closer to Marian. He could get something that she knew and loved. He would love that dang cat, and maybe, the cat would like to be read to.
